This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Jeep Patriot SUV in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter on the 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and RAM vehicles such as the Compass, Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, 500, Town & Country, 200, 300, Pacifica, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, RAM 1500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster Van may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The tools needed to complete the oil change include a 13mm socket, a 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench, a used oil catch basin, an automotive funnel and 5 U.S. quarts of new SAE 5W-20 oil.

A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers include the following: Mobil 1 M1-113, Fram PH10060, Royal Purple 10-48, K&N HP-1017, ACDelco PF48E, Bosch 3334, Purolator PL12222, WIX 57060XP, Pennzoil HPZ-167, Mopar 4892339AA, Mann-Filter ML 1030 and Hastings LF636.

Oil Drain Bolt
The first three steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the SUV on a level surface and turn off the engine.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly.

Then engage the emergency / parking brake and chock both sides of the rear wheels to prevent the car from moving.

Open the hood, lift out the yellow plastic dipstick handle an inch or two and remove the oil filler cap by twisting it off in the counterclockwise direction.

Set the oil filler cap aside in a safe place.

Lifting up the dipstick and removing the oil filler cap will help prevent a vacuum from forming and also allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

An optional step is to raise the front of the SUV with a floor jack and secure it with two jack stands.

Or use two automotive ramps to raise the vehicle.

There was enough room under the SUV to access the oil drain bolt and oil filter with out raising it but you may find it easier to lift the car for more working room.

Loosen 13mm Drain Bolt
Slide under the engine bay and locate the access holes for the oil drain bolt and the oil filter.

Move the used oil catch basin to just below the oil drain bolt.

Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn to your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine.

Loosen the oil drain bolt by turning it counterclockwise with the 13mm socket and 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench.

Move Basin Forward
Remove the oil drain bolt and allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes.

If the oil drain bolt is equipped with a crush washer, inspect it and replace it if necessary. You can purchase a new crush washer at your Jeep dealership or at most auto parts stores.

Once the oil flow slows to just an occasional drip, wipe away the oil drain hole with a rag.

Spin in the oil drain bolt in the clockwise direction a few turns to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the oil drain bolt in the clockwise direction with the 13mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to just past hand tight or about 30 ft-lbs of torque.

Slide the used oil catch container forward to just below the old oil filter.

Lubricate Rubber O-Ring
Twist off the old oil filter in the counterclockwise direction.

If you have trouble removing the old oil filter, you might need to use an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600.

Allow the old oil to drain out from the oil filter receptacle for at least a few minutes.

I recommend buying the Mobil 1 M1-113 oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Dip your pinky finger in to some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter.

Lubricating the o-ring will help it form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and make it easier to remove the filter during the next oil change.

Replace Oil Filler Cap
Make sure that the rubber o-ring from the old filter is not still attached to the engine.

Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction to about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past hand tight.

Double check that the oil drain bolt and new oil filter are tight before moving on to the next steps.

Insert an automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole.

Both the 2.0L and 2.4L I4 engines have a total oil capacity of 4.5 U.S. quarts (or 4.26L) for an oil change with a filter replacement.

To avoid the possibility of over filling the engine, I'd recommend only pouring in about 4 quarts of the new SAE 5W-20 oil at first.

Running an engine that has been over filled with oil may cause sluggish performance, cause damage to seals / gaskets or to other components.

Then temporarily replace the oil filler cap and push down the dipstick.

Oil Change Complete
Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level.

If necessary, slowly pour in the last half quart of new oil and repeatedly check the oil level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the top of the cross hatched area which indicates the "Full" or "Maximum" line.

Make sure that the oil filler cap is tight and the dipstick is pushed all the way in.

Record the oil change in your SUV's service records. It's also a good idea to check your driveway, garage or parking spot for drops of oil and check the oil level on the dipstick a few times in the next week.
