Which AirPods Should You Buy on Black Friday?
Apple has four versions of AirPods in its current lineup. In this guide, we're breaking down the differences between the models, as well as which factors are most useful when determining which pair is right for you.
If you're looking for Black Friday deals on AirPods, you likely already have a good idea what AirPods are and how they work. Here's a quick overview:
Apple AirPods (second-generation)
These are the second generation model, having completely replaced the first-generation upon release. While these are the second generation, there is no change to the naming scheme, and are still referred to as AirPods. They are the most affordable option in Apple's wireless earbud lineup, retailing for $159. But as mentioned at the top of this page, discounts are often in effect, bringing the Bluetooth earbuds well under that $160 mark, especially on Black Friday.
When price is king, choosing the regular charging case makes the most sense, especially since the earbuds themselves are identical regardless of case choice. You'll still get the universal fit and "Hey Siri" support.
Apple's AirPods lineup features three earbuds varieties
The charging case uses Lightning to charge and is the only model of AirPods not to feature wireless charging of any kind. A wireless charging case used to be available for this model but has been discontinued.

The third-generation model of AirPods takes on a new design based on the AirPods Pro. They lack changeable ear tips and have a new universal fit design that is slightly more bulbous than before.
These AirPods are priced right in the middle of the lineup at $179, have a wireless charging case that's MagSafe compatible, and use Adaptive EQ to keep audio sounding rich and clear. They also feature Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking so a user can move their head through the audio in three dimensions.
The improved sound, shorter stem with force sensor controls, and audio features set this model apart from the cheaper second-generation. They also have better battery life at six hours of listening time per charge.
Users who want Active Noise Cancelling, Transparency Mode, and changeable ear tips will need to opt for the more expensive AirPods Pro.
Apple AirPods Pro
AirPods Pro retail for $249 and are the premium earbuds option in the product line. Released in October 2019, they feature water resistance, ANC and Transparency Mode, and changeable ear tips, as opposed to a one size fits all approach of the previous models.
Apple updated the charging case to support MagaSafe attachment to chargers in late 2021. The case still charges at the same speed but features a secure magnetic connection when placed on MagSafe Chargers.

These ear tips provide a better seal for the ear canal, which is essential for Active Noise Cancelling. Using microphones inside and outside the ear, the H1 chip analyzes the audio to produce anti-noise for canceling out external noises. Simultaneously, audio being piped in by your device will continuously be adjusted for perfect sound quality. Transparency Mode uses the same technique to pipe in external audio to prevent the seal from blocking all sound when ANC isn't desired.
AirPods Max
Apple's over-ear AirPods offering delivers spatial audio support with an H1 chip in each ear cup. Available in five colors, the premium headphones retail for $549. Deals have driven prices to as low as $449, so it'll be interesting to see if retailers compete for Black Friday sales by discounting the AirPods Max below that sub-$450 price point.

Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case
This version of AirPods has been discontinued by Apple, but can still be found for sale at some retailers.
With a retail price of $199, Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case were the next step up in Apple's AirPods line. Introduced in March 2019 along with the second-generation standard charging case option above, this model (MRXJ2AM/A) offered wireless charging capability. Otherwise, they shared the same design and functions as the ones with a non-wireless charging case. You could distinguish the two cases by the charge-indicating light, as the wireless charging case had an indicating light on the outside.
Walmart dropped AirPods 2 to $89 November 10-14. This represents a $40 markdown off Apple's new $129 MSRP. Amazon is close with its $99 promo, but stay tuned to see if any retailers are able to match $89 during the holiday weekend.
